Time: 8 Saturdays, 1:00 - 4:00 pm

If you love comic books and graphic novels, then Cartooning and Comics is the perfect class for you. Wallace Ryan, local cartoonist and comic book artist will show you all the steps to making your own comic book from creating your own characters, writing your stories and all aspects of drawing them from design to pencilling, inking, lettering and sound effects. He covers specialty comics, covers and how to make your own mini-comic along with anything else you need to know about comic books.

A veteran of 20 years of teaching comic books at the Anna Templeton Centre and Memorial University, Mr. Ryan will also teach you about comic strips, comic book history and show you a retrospective of animated cartoons from Mickey Mouse to the Batman. Special guest IDW comic book artist Paul Tucker will drop by to take your questions on how to break into comics and other subjects related to how he ended up working for one of the biggest comic book companies in North America. This comprehensive course ends with a field trip to Downtown Comics where the process of how to take your comic book from your table to the comic book stands will be discussed.

Mr. Ryan was voted “Best Comic Artist in St. John's” by the readers of the Overcast in 2015 and has been called by many in the comic book community, the “King of Newfoundland Comics”. He has taught comics from the Labrador Creative Arts Festival in Goose Bay to New York City's the Little Red School House and is the co-founder of St. John's Breakdown Comic Book Jam and the Salon for the Sequential Arts. He was educated at the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto and at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
