Making Leather Moccasins (Winter)

Title: Making Leather Moccasins

In this 3 part series you will create your own set of moccasin style slippers.  You will have options of using NL harp seal leather, moose hide, seal skin, rabbit or beaver.    The participant will move through the process of creating a pattern based on their own foot size and become familiar with techniques used to cut fur and leather as well as hand sewing with leather needles and artificial sinew.

Introduction to Leather Working (Winter)

Title: Introduction to Leather Working (Using Newfoundland Harp Seal Leather)

In this series of classes you will be introduced to basic hand sewing techniques specific to leather work.  We will learn how to prepare the leather for cutting and stitching and use basic patterns to create a functional item you can take away and use. As well, the participants will learn techniques for stitching and to give their pieces a finished look.  Participants will be introduced to tools such as leather chisels, punches, mallets, burnisher, leather needles, stitch pony and artificial sinew.

Sculptural Crochet (Winter)

Times: 4 Thursdays 7:00 - 9:30 pm

Description: This class approaches the craft of crochet from a contemporary art perspective and explores how to move simple textile technique beyond making flat pieces and simple garments, into the realm of 3D crochet. The workshop will use mathematical concepts to think about crochet, and ultimately give you the freedom to manipulate yarn and form in a fresh, inventive way that satisfies your imagination. By using one simple, foundation technique, students with little experience will, by the end of the 4 weeks, will be able to create shapes and more complex sculptural pieces. This class will expand the horizons of what is possible in crochet and give you more tools to add to your creative belt. Open to all level experiences. Bring 2 to 3 different sizes of crochet hooks and any favorite yarns. Experimentation is highly encouraged and students may bring any type of flexible materials they are interested in exploring.

Rug Hooking: An Introduction (Winter)

Dates: March 4 - 18
: 3 Sundays, 2:30 - 5:30 pm
Instructor: Catherine McCausland

Details:  If you spend a few afternoons learning how to hook rugs with Catherine McCausland, then you might just get hooked for life.  In this beginners’ course, you’ll learn the basic technique, and about the tools and materials used for rug hooking.  You’ll work on small piece - learning by doing - as you transfer your design onto the burlap, cut and prepare the fabric, and start hooking.  Finishing techniques will be demonstrated as you may need additional time to finish your wall hanging.
