Graphic Novels: An Introduction (Winter)

Date: March 5 - April 16 (no class April 2)  2018

Comic and illustration veteran Wallace Ryan will use his expertise in graphic novel layout, illustration, and figure drawing to help you create your own graphic novel. You will learn how to create and write the narrative and develop characters as well as how to achieve perfect lines, weight, and proportion in your graphic novel illustrations. Your imagination is the limit! Whether you want to create a superhero epic or illustrate the tale of your parents growing up, all projects are welcomed and encouraged! All skill levels welcome.

Continuing Acrylics (Winter)

An acrylic painting class for individuals with some previous experience working with acrylics, or who have taken a previous class.  Continuing acrylics is an opportunity to explore, develop, and refine your painting technique. Expert art educator Gerald Vaandering will deliver focused instruction on developing texture, atmospheric perspective, form, shade, and colour theory. Participants will be challenged at their level of skill throughout the completion of a small series of paintings.

The Art of Photo Transfer (Winter)

Date: March 5 - 19  2018
Time: 3 Mondays 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Details: Photo transferring is a fun and exciting way of adding a personal touch to your belongings, and creating keepsakes from your treasured photos. Not only can you create artwork to hang on the wall, and hand-made cards or wrapping papers, but also add a personal touch to a host of store-bought items: notebooks & agendas, boxes and bags, candle holders, you name it! Using just a photocopies of your image and a gel medium (provided by the instructor, but it can easily be purchased at any local art supply store) you can move the image from your paper onto any other surface - wood and canvas are popular!

Bring in any images you might like to transfer - this can be designs, drawings, family photos - anything you like! Local artist Pepa Chan will show you the simple, step by step process of printing it onto various other materials to produce a small series of projects, include canvas, wood panel, and collage. In the second half of this course, bring in your own materials (books, bags, cards, etc.) and work on turning them into beautiful, unique works of art!

Abstract Methods in Drawing & Painting: Exploring the relationship of form and colour using a variety of methods and materials

Details: Paul Klee once said “A Line is a dot that went for a walk”.  Take your art practice for a walk through the exploration of Abstract Methods in Drawing & Painting.  Students will become familiar with abstraction through the relationship of form and colour.  Transform perceived information into conceptual information through marks and mark-making.  Explore colour and movement through non-objective art.  Loosen up your painting style with a wide range of techniques and materials. Make marks which convey your feelings.  Students of all levels are welcome in this class.

It is truly incredible what can be accomplished with this medium - from thick impasto to spectacularly complex layers...but you must begin somewhere! In this introductory class, you will learn the basics of paint application and colour theory as you work from images and still life to create a small series of paintings. You'll get the basics of perspective, proportion, and development of form. Expert painter and accomplished art educator Gerald Vaandering brings expertise from his practice to guide you through the foundations and into more complicated work. No experience necessary.  A great class to take with a friend!

Stained Glass Introduction (Winter)

Date: April 14 & 15,  2018
Time:   Saturday, 1:00 - 5:00 pm & Sunday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Stained glass is an eye-catching way to express yourself, and make beautiful gifts for friends or decor for your home. In this hands-on workshop Brian will teach you the basics as you craft a flat piece of stained glass to hang as a decoration or sun-catcher.

Participants are welcome to bring their own glass supplies, tools, and  projects, but this is not required. All tools and materials will be provided. This class is limited to eight participants.

Costume Drawing (Winter)

Time: 6 Tuesdays, 7:00 - 9:30 pm
Instructor: Wallace Ryan

Details: Learn to understand and draw the human form in all its wonderful complexities and subtleties, while simultaneously studying the intricacies and designs of costumes! You will learn to capture gestures, balance, proportion, form, structure, and shading, using both male and female costumed models in a respectful and encouraging atmosphere. Build both your anatomical and apparel drawing skills with the aid of a talented and experienced instructor. Leave the class with the ability to create a believable and moving representation!

Introduction to Printmaking (Winter)

Date: March 24 - 25  2018
Time: Saturday 12:00 - 4:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 - 4:00 pm
Instructor: Anita Singh
In this workshop participants will learn a variety of printmaking techniques including monotrace, collagraph and relief. Participants will experiment and gain hands-on experience with artist Anita Singh creating a series of their own original printworks. Students will learn techniques for carving, creating relief plates using foam and easycut. We will also explore Monotype and Monotrace (drawing and painterly) and collagraph prints, made by building up a ‘plate’ using a collage-like process, learn how to ink your ‘plate’ and print by pressing and rubbing using your hand, a wooden spoon and an etching press.
No previous experience required. Price includes materials and tax.
